Thursday's Topics

- Dara Taylor started the McDonald's All-American Game but went 0-3 from the floor and scored 0 points. Remember this game will be replayed tomorrow on ESPN2 at 3 p.m. so we can all judge for ourselves how she played.
- Kristi Toliver will participate in the State Farm Slam Dunk and Three Point Contest tonight from 9-11 on ESPN. If she beats the other ladies than she gets to take on the men's winner.
- Rick Maese wrote a scathing piece about Coach Frese's Coaching Ability yesterday and I was wondering what people thought about it. Post your comments below. I do have to say that I agree with him for the most part.

I partly agree with Maese and partly don't....part of me wonders if the defensive issue has been personnel related (this would explain why the ppg the team has permitted has only changed a relatively small amount since Walz left). I view Kizer as an upgrade on the defensive end (vs Lang) and Rodgers & Barrett as generally better defenders than KT (who I love, but will admit that she's not a good defender). Personnel aside, I think perhaps the biggest needed adjustment is an increase in mental toughness.

As for Tuesday's game, I was there and shocked at how timid Lynetta, Anjale, and Kim Rodgers all appeared - this timidity led to miscues (passing, too much dribbling, no shooting, missed shots, etc). KT didn't have her shot against Vandy; I was hoping it'd return for Monday (as we all know, it didn't & the 3 point shooting contest shows that it's still gone)....I guess some nights just aren't your night (see last year's game against Stanford where they just couldn't miss even with hands in their faces). I think that no matter what, if Louisville had run into us 2 weeks ago, we would've smacked them, but what can you do aside from look forward to next year!?! :)

I agreed with the majority of what Maese said. I think the defensive issues has more to do with lack of depth than anything. I think all of the Terps play solid on D except Toliver. They couldn't really risk anyone getting into foul trouble. Because of Anjale Barrett and Coleman's versatility, the Terps didn't suffer too much when Toliver was in foul trouble but I don't think you can say they'd fare so well if Coleman or Kizer, for example, picked up early fouls. That's why they couldn't over extend themselves on the defensive end. The Cards were just the better team on that night. 9 times out of 10, I really believe that the Terps win but what's done is done. Gotta look ahead to next year
